The Annual Recognition Banquet was held on June 14, 2018 at the American Legion Post 42 in Towanda. We were extremely fortunate to have the venue and meal donated by the American Legion! Approximately 60 volunteer tutors, adult learners, and guests attended the event which was emceed by Wes Skillings. Guest speakers for the evening included current adult learner, Gene Martin, and his volunteer tutor, Sue Fahnestock, as well as former ESL (English as a Second Language) adult learner, Nargiza Ismailova, and her volunteer tutor, Claire Borits. Gene shared with us how the Literacy Program has impacted his life and why he enrolled in the program several years ago. Sue and Gene both noted how they have formed a special bond with each other over the three years of working together.
Nargiza told those in attendance what it was like to come to the United States not knowing how to speak English other than “thank you” and “hello”. She enrolled in the Literacy Program and was assigned her “saving grace”, volunteer tutor Claire Borits. During her time in the program, Nargiza became a US citizen and she is now working toward earning a degree from Lackawanna College.
Program Coordinator, Aubrey Carrington, highlighted the 2017 accomplishments and gave a brief overview of the goals for 2018. The volunteer tutors in attendance were honored with a gift for their hours of service. Adult learners who attended the event were given a gift bag which included a Certificate of Recognition for their hard work & dedication.
